The Guild

It is often too easy to be a consumer, but it makes for laziness poverty, and a diminished sense of self-worth. We are also producers, but more often than not our daily productive efforts (called work) are for the benefit of others. Empower yourself by producing things you never thought possible. From perfume to kilns, from power objects to alcohol and weapons, the guild will show you how.

The Art of Distillation

John French

Art of Distillation

A Treatise of the choicest Spagyrical Preparations. Six books in one from 1651. John French was an English doctor known for his contributions to chemistry and in particular to distillation. He was born in 1616 at Broughton, near Banbury, Oxfordshire. He obtained a B.A. degree from Oxford University in 1637 and an M.A. in 1640, qualifying as a physician with an MD in 1648. He died in 1657 near Boulogne while serving as a physician to the English army. He left a widow, Mary, and a son, John.

He lived at a time when the new science of chemistry was developing from alchemy and was an enthusiast for its application to medicine. He was known for his extensive knowledge of chemistry and was respected by scientists of the time such as Robert Boyle. He is chiefly remembered for publishing this book, a detailed handbook of knowledge and practice at the time, said to be possibly the earliest definitive book on the topic. However, it has been claimed that much of it was a translation of an earlier (1500) German text by Hieronymous Brunswig.

Enquire Within Upon Everything

Enquire Within

Everything you ever wanted to know about everything. Give it a try and see.

Enquire Within Upon Everything was a how-to book for domestic life, first published in 1856 by Houlston and Sons of Paternoster Square in London, and then continuously reprinted in many new and updated editions as additional information and articles were added. The book was created with the intention of providing encyclopedic information on a topics as diverse as etiquette, parlour games, cake recipes, laundry tips, holiday preparation and first aid. The book was a popular addition to the Victorian (and later post-Victorian) home; by the 89th edition, some 1,180,000 copies had published. With the release of the 113th edition, this number had risen to over 1,500,000.

Tim Berners-Lee apparently named his precursor of the World Wide Web, ENQUIRE, after this work. He said that its title was suggestive of magic and the book served as a portal to a world of information. He thought it not a perfect analogy for the Web, but a primitive starting point.
